10 Best and 10 Worst States for Equal Pay

“New data analysis from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) shows that the gulf between men and women’s wages differs greatly depending on the state where you live. The research, based on U.S. Census data, was released in time for Equal Pay Day, April 17th, which symbolically marks the number of extra days women would have to work into 2012 in order to earn, on average, as much as their male counterparts did in 2011.”

Ashley Judd has had enough of what she calls a “pointedly nasty, gendered, and misogynistic conversation about femininity in our culture, and she’s inviting women—and men—to speak up about their own experiences. “I want people to share their puffy-face moment,” Judd said on NBC’s Nightly News. “I think what happened to me is very common. It might look a little different than other people’s lives because they might not be public figures, but we all go through it.”
So let’s hear it! Tell us your puffy-face moment—those times you were bullied or judged for your looks, and what you did about it.
In case you missed it and have no idea what we’re talking about, see this post for some background.

The Nine Most Influential Women in Tech

How We're Paying For Putting Ourselves Down (And Why We'll Pay For You To Say Something Nice!)

lindawyatt:

This woman is a goddess. I just watched Miss Representation and I feel so empowered, but at the same time it’s incredibly disheartening that, as a woman trying to become a director, producer, and screenwriter, that my career could be hindered because of the stereotypes and misogyny that exists in our country, and in the world. It’s encouraging though, to know that a woman like Jennifer Siebel, who is extremely gorgeous, talented, intelligent, poised, and empowered can have a career in the film industry despite all the prejudice and unrealistic expectations women are held to.
I encourage all girls and women to watch Miss Representation because it’s really enlightening, empowering, and encouraging. Actually, I encourage all men to watch this as well, because it is important for men to be informed about this issue. It’s an incredibly in-depth look at how women are portrayed in the media, and how that affects our self-esteem and self-worth.
We all need to stop buying into what the media tells us is beautiful, basically. Because I think everyone is beautiful, and I don’t need a television show or a gossip magazine to tell me what and who is. Everyone- men, women, children- needs to start being okay with themselves and start believing in who they are, despite what others tell them.

“Bully is a wrenching, intensely moral film, and so potentially useful to children who are either being bullied, or doing the bullying, that the MPAA’s Victorian prudery about a few instances of schoolyard language can’t help but seem boneheaded.” — Bob Mondello
